"The Dwellers" is a beautiful, haunting and terrifying British psychological horror that tells the story of a mentally scarred woman starting a new life in an isolated former mining town who soon finds herself forced to battle against her step-daughter's obsession with tales of a creature living in the ancient forest and a strange community harbouring dark secrets.

There is recurring theme running through our first slate of films: that of the forest, the woods and the wilderness. The forest has always held a magnetic attraction for this producer. And our first films deal with themes of isolation, loneliness and fear of the unknown.

"[The forest] is where we learn this fear when playing as children and discovering there are far too many hiding places and too many opportunities for playmates to jump out and frighten us."

- Fear of Stuff

Scholarly, the forest could be a symbol of darkness where all sorts of evil, including witchcraft or any kind of immorality could happen. In many popular stories, evil things happen in the forest. At the heart of every forest is a darkness that bides its time.

The forest is a place of magic that can be dangerous, but also a place of opportunity and transformation. Forests are places full of mystery, where imagination and the subconscious can run free, where rites of passage take place, where we can return to our primal selves.

‘Entering the Dark Forest or the Enchanted Forest is a threshold symbol: the soul entering the perils of the unknown; the realm of death; the secrets of nature, or the spiritual world which man must penetrate to find the meaning.’

- JC Cooper ‘An Illustrated Encyclopaedia Of Traditional Symbols’
